Charlie Parker, who wrote the tune “Relaxin at The Camarillo”, was a genius, an outstanding musician with unique improvisational skills; the sound of his alto saxophone flew like a bird over any chord changes. His tone was sharp as a welder's flame.
In 1946 he spent six months at a mental institution in California, the Camarillo State Hospital in Ventura County. He was sent there after being charged with indecent exposure and arson. Parker was arrested for an incident where he fell asleep while smoking and set his hotel bed on fire. This was after wandering through the hotel lobby wearing nothing but socks (don't we all dream about doing that).
